Step By Step - Acne Facts

Acne vulgaris is derived from a Greek word 'akme' to mean 'point, edge' in the sense of 'skin eruption'. It is a common human disease found on the skin and affects mostly the face and upper parts of the chest and back because these parts have a huge population of the sebaceous follicles. It occurs because of change in philosebaceous units, change that require androgen stimulation. Some of the lesions occurring may be inflammatory while others are not. Acne is common during puberty in both males and females because of the increase in the hormone androgen in adolescents. Varying in human beings, the condition may disappear or be carried into adulthood.

Severe cases of this condition may be described as 'nodulocytic' and the nodules were called 'cysts', and is a severe case of the condition that can appear anywhere where sweat accumulates including buttocks, armpits and groin, and affects the deeper skin. The condition has effects such as reducing self esteem, depression and in severe cases suicide and general social insecurity.
The physical scars are known as 'icepeaks', they cause indentation on the skin surface and are darker because the skin tries to heal itself resulting in too much collagen at one spot. It develops as a result of blockage of follicles and also increases in sebum production because of the expansion of the sebaceous glands that occurs with increase in androgen forming a plug of keratin and sebum called 'micromedo'. The micromedo may enlarge to form an open comedone known as a black head or closed one milia. Both of them are caused by pores being blocked by sebum the skins natural oil and dead skin cells. Other causes of acne may be hormonal like menstrual cycle other linked hormones being testosterone and diphydrotestisterone.
It may occur in adult women because of conditions such as pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome and cushigs syndrome which are rare. It may occur at menopause because the body fails to produce 'ostradiol' which is the body's natural anti acne. It may however be genetic where it occurs and runs in the family with a history of the condition. The same has also been associated with psychological conditions such as stress that worsens it.
Diet may also be a great contributor of the same especially foods with milk and chocolate content. There are various methods of diagnosis of acne including: the Cooks Grading Scale, Pills Burry Scale and Leeds Grading Technique.

There are different methods of treatment like the use of Benzol Peroxide, anti-biotic, retinoid, anti-androgen, hormonal treatment, and alpha hydroxyl acid among others. They have different effects including unblocking the pores and suppressing the androgen hormone. Also procedures may be done on the affected person such as 'dermabrasion' which is cosmetic meant to remove the damaged skin. Photo therapy is light exposure and is a short term treatment where an efflorescent bulb is created for the purpose. Also photodynamic therapy may be used and is the use of ultra-violet light to control the condition.
Lastly, acne scars from acne may be removed by use of laser surgery and is effective for people with the cystic condition, the boils can be drained this way, and the use of egg oil because it contains anti-oxidant, tee-tree oil and Aloe Vera.

Types of Acne and the Way of Treatment

Acne is not just one particular type of skin blemish; it is a skin disease. It is an inflammation of the sebaceous glands and results in comedones, nodules, papules and cysts all divided into superficial acne and deep acne. The acne most are familiar with, the common acne, or acne vulgaris is superficial. Cystic acne is the deep kind of acne that can cause embarrassment and scarring.

Acne is generally divided into two types: Inflammatory acne and Non-inflammatory acne. While the pathogenesis of acne is not totally understood, it is reported that hormonal changes are largely the cause. This is in part based on the observation that castrated males do not seem to get acne. Propionibacterium acnes also have roles in creating this inflammatory acne. This lipase of this bacterium breaks down the triglycerides in the sebaceous oils from glands walls of the follicle and this leads to inflammation.
Superficial Acne
This is the acne vulgaris and can often be effectively managed with an acne treatment. Among the manifestations of this acne are the simple blackheads and the whiteheads. The only distinction between the two comedones is that the blackhead is an open comedone and exposed to oxygen. The chemical reaction between the keratinous material in the blackhead and the oxygen produces a color change on the tip of the comedone, turning it brown or black. The whitehead is covered by a microscopically thin layer of epithelium and thus is protected from interacting with oxygen.
Papules, nodules and pustules are still within the category of superficial acne. Superficial cysts are also characteristic of simple acne. This type of acne has the best chance of healing without causing any scar formation. If an inflamed blackhead or a pustule is being manipulated, where many other bacteria will be introduced, then a progression to a deep type of acne may follow. Again, an acne treatment will help reduce breakouts of superficial types.

Deep Acne
This is often the result of traumatic attempts to express blackheads or whiteheads. In this attempt, other bacteria are introduced. The body's function of trying to neutralize the invading bacteria, will contribute to the formation of highly inflamed nodules and deep pus pockets, also known as cysts. If the cysts rupture to the outside, its contents will be expelled. If they rupture toward the inside, an abscess will form. With deep acne, scarring is very common. Most acne lesions will unfortunately be on the face or neck. Sometimes, the upper back and chest is also involved with acne lesions.
The Treatment For Acne
Superficial acne will be treated differently from deep acne. With some superficial acne, no medical treatment is usually needed. You can try facial masks or little strips applied to your skin. When you pull either mask or strips off, the comedones will be pulled out of the skin. Most will naturally resolve with proper hygiene. If you have the superficial kind of pustule acne, applying topical erythromycin or clindamycin is often highly beneficial.
Over the counter drugs can usually be used with really good results. For deep acne, medical treatment by a physician is necessary. Topical treatment for pus-filled cysts or abscesses is futile. It needs systemic therapy. Medications like erythromycin, tetracycline, minocycline and doxycycline all have a place in the treatment of severe acne. Some of these drugs have worse side effects than others and your doctor must decide what is best for you. In refractory cases, the synthetic vitamin A drug isotretinoin is prescribed, but certain precautions have to be taken with this drug before it is prescribed.

You could try covering them with some cosmetics that you use for your face but you will find very often that it just does not do the job every effectively. In fact some products that are touted as effective as make-up for scars do not do the job at all.
Is make-up for scars effective? There are some cosmetics on the market made specifically for camouflaging scars and some of them do more for you than just cover up your scars.
Take a look At Some Brand Name Make-Up For Scars
